Cosmetic, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery/BoNT treatment

BoNT treatment is perfect for reducing the signs of ageing and creating a refreshed appearance

The BoNT treatment (also referred to as the chemical brow lift) is a non-surgical brow lift which has become a popular and safe alternative to the surgical brow lift (where on very rare occasions the patient may be left with a small scar or risk of infection).

One of the first signs of getting older is the brow descending: The brow drops, which compacts the upper eyelid tissues and can give a slightly sad or angry appearance to the eyes.

The BoNT treatment creates a refreshed appearance and is perfect for reducing the signs of ageing, and this includes younger patients who may be experiencing early stages of brow droop. The result is a higher brow arch, reduced forehead wrinkles, and an overall more open, youthful look.

Following an in-depth consultation, the BoNT treatment involves injecting a neurotoxin called botulinum type A (abbreviated to BoNT) into the muscles that pull down on the eyebrows (called the corrugator muscles), which are most active when you frown or furrow the brow. Further injections are carried out in muscles that surround the eye, including the crow’s feet area. The botulinum toxin injections will cause the areas treated to relax and the muscles to have less of a downward-pulling effect.

Often, botulinum toxin injections are done in conjunction with a dermal fillers treatment to smooth deeper lines/folds whilst extending the positive impact of the procedure.

Whilst treatment around the eyes is the most popular procedure, patients also chose the botulinum toxin injections to soften or emphasise facial expressions and features around the nose, mouth and neck too.

At 152 Harley Street, the BoNT treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic in our state-of-the-art day case theatre. You will be able to leave the clinic shortly after the procedure, but still receive the same thorough and excellent aftercare that you would expect with a general anaesthetic.

BoNT treatment (also known as botulinum toxin injections) aim to reduce a drooping brow caused by ageing, to create a more youthful appearance, a clearer field of vision, and correct the asymmetry of the forehead and eyebrows which will boost self-confidence. Treatment is also used to soften or emphasise facial expressions and features around the nose, mouth and neck.

A BoNT treatment is a quick, easy, and relatively harmless treatment to provide an enhanced appearance that is not permanent. This means that additional treatments may be necessary to achieve an optimal outcome. A surgical eyebrow lift is permanent and can last for 10 to 12 years depending on age and skincare regime.

There is no specific age to get a botulinum toxin treatment however the BoNT treatment may not right for more mature individuals as heavier wrinkles and more severe creases will generally require a surgical eyebrow lift to achieve the desired appearance.

Following BoNT treatment you may experience swelling, redness and some tenderness but this will be mild and should subside within a few hours. It is recommended that you do not massage or rub the treated areas for three days.

The pain from having a BoNT treatment is very low, and even without using a numbing agent, you will just feel a slight stinging sensation.

The BoNT treatment typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated.

Typically a BoNT treatment will take two to four days to take effect. The maximum results will occur within 10 to 14 days, and these results will last for at least three months. Used in conjunction with fillers, the affects of the treatment can last for an average of 18 months. Additional BoNT treatments can be arranged to top-up or maintain the appearance you want.

The cost of a BoNT treatment can vary, depending on the number of areas being treated and whether the procedure is being done in conjunction with fillers.

While generally considered safe, BoNT treatment does carry some risks, including bruising, bleeding, infection, and an allergic reaction. It can also cause temporary muscle weakness or drooping in the treated area, which typically resolves within a few weeks.

Before your BoNT treatment, you should avoid taking blood thinners such as aspirin or ibuprofen for at least a week. You should also avoid alcohol for a day or two before the treatment to reduce the risk of bruising.

Most people can resume their normal activities immediately after a BoNT treatment. However, it’s important to avoid strenuous exercise or activities that increase blood flow to the treated area for at least 24 hours to minimize the risk of bruising.

During your consultation, your practitioner will evaluate your medical history, examine your skin, and discuss your goals for the treatment. They will also explain the procedure, including the potential risks and benefits, and answer any questions you may have.

BoNT treatment is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with a history of neuromuscular disorders, or those with an allergy to any of the ingredients in the injection. Your practitioner will evaluate your medical history and determine if BoNT treatment is right for you.

Yes, BoNT treatment has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of certain medical conditions, such as chronic migraines, excessive sweating, and muscle spasms. Your practitioner can discuss whether BoNT treatment may be appropriate for your specific medical condition.

"I suffered from drooping eye lids that affected my field of vision, and after extensive research I decided to have a consultation with Tessa Fayers about my condition and the treatments that she could offer to correct it. The initial consultation was extensive and considerate. Tessa explained very clearly what was causing the condition and what could be done. I had several options in front of me, but at no point did I feel pressured or rushed to make a decision. When I did, I managed to get the surgery within a fortnight. The attention I received from the staff, the anaesthetist, and Tessa herself, on the day of the surgery was first class. I have been quite apprehensive with previous (unrelated) surgeries but felt very relaxed throughout my time under the care of Tessa and her team. The results were exactly as I'd hoped for and the only regret I have is not doing it years ago!!! I could not recommend Tessa highly enough."
