Breast augmentation, also referred to as breast enlargement, is a commonly performed procedure for women looking to increase their breast size and projection, restore volume and improve their breast shape. Overall, breast implants can help to enhance your appearance and provide a more feminine figure.

Cosmetic breast augmentation is a surgical procedure which involves placing a silicone implant behind the breast tissue or occasionally beneath the pec muscle that lies beneath the breast tissue. The inserted breast implant projects and pushes the natural breast tissue forward, giving a fuller and larger cup size. At the initial consultation, your surgeon will discuss the procedure in more detail and help you choose an appropriate implant depending on your requirements.

Who is suitable for a breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation can enhance appearance and build self-confidence in ladies with a variety of concerns.

Some ladies undergo breast implant surgery following pregnancy or  major weight loss. The breasts can lose volume, feel droopy and deflated and breast implants can help restore shape and volume.

Breast augmentation can also help ladies  who have minimal breast tissue, feel self-conscious and wish to be a larger cup size.  Breast Asymmetry (uneven breasts) can also be improved by using different sized breast implants in each breast to make them more even.

What happens during a breast augmentation procedure?

During breast augmentation surgery, a 5 to 6 cm incision is made below the breast, in the breast fold. The implant is then inserted either in front of the chest muscle and under the breast tissue (referred to as a ‘sub-glandular’) or behind both the chest pec muscle and breast gland (termed ‘submuscular’). The incision is closed with dissolvable sutures and the wounds are covered with a small dressing.

After surgery, you will be put into a surgical post-op bra to support the breasts as they heal.

How long does breast augmentation last?

Modern implants are designed to last at least 10 to 15 years and can last even up to 20 years in some cases.

It is important to see a specialist for an assesssment when you notice a change of shape or feel of your breasts and determine whether any surgical intervention is required.

Is breast augmentation very painful?

During the breast augmentation procedure, you will be under deep sedation and therefore no pain or discomfort will be felt during the procedure. Following the procedure, you may experience some pain and discomfort around the breast area however this can be aided by prescribed painkillers.

How long does breast augmentation take to heal?

Following a breast augmentation, the breasts are uncomfortable for the first 2 weeks and any discomfort reduces after this period. It can take around 4-6 weeks to completely recover from surgery and get back to normal activity. The scars heal well and are barely visible but can take one to two years to completely fade depending on the patient.

How long does breast augmentation surgery take?

Breast augmentation takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to complete.

What aftercare should I do post breast augmentation?

Your surgeon will advise you regarding the best aftercare as each surgeon will have different preferences. Generally, following breast augmentation a supportive surgical bra should be worn day and night for around 6 weeks. Driving is possible from 10 to 14 days depending on the level of your discomfort after surgery. You should not engage in any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for the first six weeks, although light exercise is possible after 4 weeks. You should be able to work from home after a couple of days if you are able to to but it is best to wait 7 to 10 days before heading back into the office.

How much does breast augmentation cost?

Breast Augmentation surgery costs around £7000 but this can vary depending on how complex the surgery is and any asymmetry that would be a corrected.
