Cosmetic, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery/Breast Reduction

Breast reduction can help reduce pain associated with large breasts as well as improve their shape

Breast reduction is a procedure which effectively reduces the size of enlarged breasts by removing excess breast tissue depending what size you wish to be after surgery. The breasts are then repositioned and reshaped to match the reduction in breast tissue and uplift the breasts.

Enlarged breasts can lead to severe neck, shoulder and back pain which consequently has a significant impact on everyday life. The weight of the breasts may lead to shoulder grooving, due to bra straps digging into the shoulders.

Rashes, irritation or sores can begin to develop beneath enlarged breasts, especially in the summer, which can cause significant pain and discomfort.

For some women, their large breasts do not match their frame or body shape and finding clothes can be difficult. A reduction can make their breasts more proportionate and harmonious with the rest of their bodies.

Physical exercise can be limited due to the weight of the breasts and difficulties supporting the breasts with sports bras during exercise, often leading to weight gain.

Some patients with breast asymmetry (where there is a difference between breast sizes or position of the nipples) often choose to have a breast reduction to make the breasts more even.

Each individual patient has their own personal reasons for considering breast reduction. You will be able to discuss your concerns and expectations during your initial consultation with one of our expert surgeons.

Ladies choose to have their breasts reduced in size for a number of reasons including, shoulder, back and neck pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, rashes and sweating under the breasts, difficulty exercising and finding well fitted clothes, or correction of breast asymmetry.

At your consultation, you will be able to discuss with your surgeon how much of a reduction you would like and roughly what size you would like to be after surgery. Breast reduction is carried out under general anaesthetic either as a day case or with an overnight stay.

On the day of your surgery, your surgeon will take consent and do the necessary marking for a reduction of your breasts.

During the surgery, the areola will be reduced in order to make it proportionate to your reduced breasts and the nipple is kept alive on a ‘pedicle’. The excess breast tissue is then removed, to achieve your desired breast size. The nipple is then secured into its  new position, the remaining breast is brought together and reshaped to form a new, smaller breast. Usually, the wounds are closed with absorbable stitches and there are no drains to be removed.

A typical breast reduction procedure takes between 2 and 2.5 hours.

Following breast reduction surgery, you will need around 14 days off work but you may be able to work from home after a couple of days.

Following a breast reduction procedure, there are permanent anchor shaped scars – with a scar around the nipple / areola area, a vertical scar from the nipple to the breast fold and a horizontal scar in the breast fold.

During breast reduction surgery, you will have a given general anaesthetic where you are asleep and so there is no pain or discomfort will be experienced during your procedure. Following surgery, you may experience some soreness and discomfort in the area for 2 weeks which then eases in the subsequent 4 to 6 weeks. Your surgeon will prescribe painkillers to help manage any pain for the first few weeks.

Following a breast reduction, the breasts have dressings for 2 weeks and during this period there is some discomfort. By 4 to 6 weeks, you will be fairly recovered from surgery and be able to resume normal activity. The long-term recovery and fading of the scars can take up to one year.

Following breast reduction surgery, the results are usually permanent unless you put on weight or have children.

I just knew I had chosen the best person to go to. Her team always answer promptly any queries or concerns you may have. "I can’t thank Amber enough for her support and understanding during the period of my life when I was considering having my breast reduced. I knew deep down I wanted to have the procedure, but I was wracked with guilt and felt I was being overly vain and selfish and was taking unnecessary risks. Having had the procedure six months ago, I can honestly say it has changed my life – I can wear all the clothes I could never have got away with before, and I am free again from neck pain and to play sport and run about with the children. I booked three sessions with Amber, which gave me the time to look at what I wanted and how I wanted the rest of my life. It allowed me to work out what I really wanted to do for me."
